History Series Part 1
The Genesis of Bokaro Steel Plant
Incorporated as a limited company in 1964, Bokaro Steel Plant was conceived as the country's first Swadeshi steel plant. It was an ambitious project by the Government of India aimed at making the country self-reliant in heavy industries. The initial site was selected primarily because of its geographical advantages. Situated close to the coal belts of Jharia and the iron ore mines of Kiriburu, Bokaro was the perfect location for a massive integrated steel plant. From deep planning to laying the foundation, the genesis of BSL represents India's post-independence determination.
